This folder contains LTVT-readable files in .csv format related to the

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera Narrow Angle Camera Master Targeting Database

as of 14 May 2009:

  http://ser.sese.asu.edu/LSM/files/lroc_target_master_May14.xls

downloaded from:

  http://ser.sese.asu.edu/LSM/targeting.php on 2010 Jan 09

The list on which they are based:

  lroc_target_master_May14.tab

is also included.

The Master List includes a descriptive "Site_name" and numeric "Site_ID" (of the
form "LRO-665") for 6494 regions of interest, each of which is defined by a series
of longitude-latitude points, usually defining a closed figure, but sometimes a
point or segmented line. In the LTVT dot files each region has been assigned a
center at the average of the point directions and a diameter large enough to
encompass the point most distant from that center

For simplicity of display and compatibility with the CSV format, commas in
Site_name's have been replaced with semicolons; and superfluous white space
has been removed.

Once the "Site_name" or "Site_ID" is known, detailed information, including the
reason(s) the region was selected, can be found by consulting the Master List
(which is NOT itself LTVT-readable).

The Master List includes 1586 regions identified as "Count area for mare basalt unit".
In the dot files, the regions that are NOT part of that set have been flagged for
display when the Diameter Threshold is set to -1. As usual, to display all regions,
set the threshold to zero.

Because map-labeling preferences may vary, several dot-file versions have been
included in this folder:

1. lroc_target_master_May14_LTVT_LF_format_SiteID.csv : the label information
consists of the Site_ID only; for example: "LRO-665"

2. lroc_target_master_May14_LTVT_LF_format_SiteName.csv : the label information
consists of the Site_Name only; for example:
"DHC Crater in SW floor of Deutsch; DHC impact crater 05 (High Sun)"

3. lroc_target_master_May14_LTVT_LF_format_SiteID_SiteName.csv : the label information
consists of the Site_ID followed by a colon and the Site_Name:
"LRO-665: DHC Crater in SW floor of Deutsch; DHC impact crater 05 (High Sun)"

4. lroc_target_master_May14_LTVT_SF_format_SiteName_SiteID.csv : the label information
consists of the Site_Name followed by a colon and the Site_ID (without the dash):
"DHC Crater in SW floor of Deutsch; DHC impact crater 05 (High Sun) : LRO 665"

Formats 1 and 3 list the Site_ID's numerically, as they are encountered in the Master List.
Formats 2 and 4 have been sorted alphabetically based on the Site_Name, grouping features
with similar descriptions (e.g., dark-haloed craters).

In formats 1-3, every region has been assigned the USGS code "LF" for "landing site"
name.

In format 4 they have been given USGS code "SF" for "satellite feature"
(lettered crater). The LTVT mouseover display will identify them as "craters" and
regard everything preceding the final number as the "Parent Name". By going to
"Tools..Change dot/label preferences..." one can choose to label the dots with
just the LRO number, or with the Site_Name followed by the number (and possibly
the diameter). Whatever labeling format has been selected, the full information
will be displayed in the mouseover readout box in the lower right of the main
LTVT screen (although it may be too lengthy to display correctly).

For most purposes, format 3 or 4 will be the most practical, since they display
all the summary information and provide the numeric Site_ID, which is the easiest
entry point for locating further details in the Master List.
